 What is CPAN ?

CPAN stands for "Converged Packet Access Network" . It is a transmission equipment that is based on MPLS-TP network and implemented in telecommunication infrastructure to provide converged multi-service connection over packet .MPLS-TP is the abbreviate form of Multi-Protocol-Label-Switching Transport-Profile.

Evolution of CPAN MPLS-TP Standard.

It is designed with the concept of PTN (Packet transport network) standard. PTN has combined features of IEEE, IETF and ITU .

IEEE:- The prime goal to improve the Ethernet based technology such as;ERP, RPR, PBB
IETF:-The prime goal to improve and enhanced the MPLS, PWE3 , VPLS technology.
ITU:- The prime goal to improve the T-MPLS standard.

MPLS-TP is formed with the joint working team of IETF and ITU in March  2008.

Joint Working Team has provide  three plane for MPLS-TP standard.

1. Management Plane.
2. Control Plane.
3. Data Plane.

Layer Hierarchy of MPLS-TP

There are three types of layer in MPLS-TP:-

1. Client Service Layer:-Ethernet, ATM, PDH/SDH
2. Server Layer:-PW, LSP, Section
3. Link Layer:-Ethernet , POS.

Ethernet Traffic:- FE/ Ge/ 10Ge / 100Ge
ATM Traffic:- STM-1 ATM
PDH/SDH Traffic:- E1 /T1/ STM-1/ STM-16
POS Traffic:-STM-1/16/64

Overview of MPLS-TP CPAN Network.

CPAN Network has both feature of Packet network and SDH/SONET network. therefor It gives efficiency, flexibility , performance and carrier-grade features.CPAN equipment works best of the both network and provide converged multi-service in the telecommunication media.CPAN technology used as an aggregation network in telecom transmission node.

Some other classification of  Telecom Networks/Nodes.

1. Client Network.
2. Access Network.
3. Aggregation Node.
4. Distribution Node
5. Edge Node
6. Multi Core Node.

CPAN works as an Aggregation node as well as Distribution Node.

Access Network:-CPAN, Ethernet Switch, 2G/3G Node/BTS, DSL, PON, Leased Line Router
Aggregation Node:- CPAN, OCLAN,MNGPAN,RPR.
Distribution Node:-CPAN,
Edge Node:-PE Router. BNG,Radius server
Multi Core Node:- P Router, IP/MPLS, SIP, VoD,TV

Features of Packet Network:-

1. Statistical Multiplexing in IP network.
2. Flexible transport containers for IP services.
3. Service-aware.
4. Advanced QoS.
5. Scalability.

It is also preferred for efficiency and flexibility transmission in telecom.

Features of SDH/SONET Network.

1. Connection oriented network connect point to point physically.
2. Low delay and  jitter offers during transmission.
3. High clock accuracy required for all the node.
4. Resiliency it will take 50ms to switch over after fault accrue in working path.

CPAN MPLS-TP  has combined features of both Networks.

Advantages of CPAN Technology

1. Efficient Bandwidth utilization,
2. Sharing bandwidth between services.
3. Combined features of Packet and SDH/SONET network
4. Work in a UNI and NNI interface .
5. OAM features available.
6. Resiliency-1:1,1+1,Linear,Ring
7. 3-Layer Architecture.
8. QoS with 8 classes.
9. EMS feature.

CPAN Nodes aggregates voice, video and data from access network and hands-over to the MNGPAN, IP/MPLS Core.
